Colorado State rămâne fără coordonator defensiv în plin meci

Colorado State lose their defensive coordinator mid-game

Tyson Summers lost defensive play-calling in the first quarter of the defeat to Oregon State and left the sideline. Jim Mora: he is no longer with the program.

Tyson Summers began Saturday's game calling the Colorado State Rams defence. By about the middle of the first quarter, he no longer was. Soon after, he was no longer on the sideline either.

The Oregon State Beavers won 56-26 in Fort Collins, in the hosts' homecoming game. It was the Rams' first Pac-12 game of the season. Afterwards, head coach Jim Mora explained what had happened at his press conference.

"Tyson was relieved of his play-calling duties. He left the field and he is no longer with this football program," Mora said, according to Yahoo Sports. He added that the decision is permanent.

Mora said removing the play-calling duties was his decision. He never considered asking Summers to leave the sideline. According to Mora, Summers decided on his own to leave the field.

McClendon takes over the defence

Sideline reporter Dalen Cuff said on the broadcast, as reported by the Coloradoan, that co-defensive coordinator Kenny McClendon was running the defence. He had been calling plays since about midway through the first quarter. Summers had not been seen on the sideline since then.

McClendon, who also holds the assistant head coach title, stays on as defensive coordinator and play-caller. Cornerbacks coach Trent Matthews relayed the signals from the sideline. Mora said McClendon's first call ended in a sack and a forced fumble.

The change did not stop the visitors. The Rams had conceded 14 points in the first quarter and gave up 42 more before the end. Oregon State gained 727 yards on 71 plays. Quarterback Braden Atkinson completed 30 of 34 passes for 413 yards and five touchdowns, and the Beavers rushed for 291 yards.

Colorado State are now 2-3 and have conceded 193 points in five games, an average of 38.6. A week earlier the Rams lost 59-45 away to the UTSA Roadrunners.

Summers had previously run Colorado State's defence in 2015 under Mike Bobo, before two seasons as head coach at Georgia Southern. He returned to Fort Collins in 2025 under Jay Norvell. After Norvell's dismissal, he led the team as interim head coach for the final five games. Mora, who arrived from Connecticut, kept him on staff.

Summers had not commented publicly at the time of publication. McClendon has nearly two weeks to prepare before the next game, on 15 October, away at the Texas State Bobcats.
